Winners of BikerDown’s Customized Wheelchair Competition

October 20, 2020 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

Motorcycle Awareness and bringing unity to the biker community is the Mission of the BikerDown Foundation. Saturday, October 17th, Five (5) teams from the riding community gathered at Dirty Dogs Roadhouse in Golden to present their customized wheelchairs. Another phase of the day was a medical equipment drive to collect additional medical equipment that BikerDown loans out to the injured riders in the Colorado community.

RiderJustice.com is the advocacy arm of the O’Sullivan Law firm one of the premier motorcycle law firms in Colorado

Sponsor Rider Justice had donated 10 standard wheelchairs to get the competition started and to ensure that all teams had the same wheelchair to work with. The teams had several months to use their creativity and get their club, ministry or groups message reflected in the wheelchair. Teams were judged on their creativity, usefulness of the wheelchair and overall presentation

1st place and People’s choice winner Soldier’s for Jesus Colorado

The 1st place winner of the competition and People’s choice winner was Soldier’s for Jesus of Colorado. Their chair showed so much creativity and was completely functional for an injured rider because the whole electric chair design came off so that the injured rider could use it.

2nd Place went to Biker’s For Justice an group that helps abused children in the Denver area

2nd place was given to Biker’s for Justice a riding group that helps abused children here in Denver. Thomas Train was their inspiration for their customized wheelchair and Fuzz, Founder of Rider Justice pulled out all the stops with steam coming out the train pipe, a track for Thomas and a bell to let everyone know that Thomas the Train is riding thru. This wheelchair is so amazing, that BikerDown has asked Biker’s for Justice to work with us to donate the chair to Children’s Hospital in Denver, so that a child in the hospital might get to enjoy Thomas.

3rd Place went to the Sober Souls, MC – Sober Souls is a motorcycle club that enjoys a sober life and helps anyone in their journey to recovery.

Sober Souls, MC – 3rd place – This was one of CRN’s favorites because every time you came to see their booth, you found something else they had done to customize this chair including but not limited to the brass nuts, and brass knuckles on the arm rests. BikerDown Foundation has had a long standing friendship with the Sober Souls, MC and we were so honored that they participated in this competition.

Christian Riders in Faith spared no expense on this candy apple red HD wheelchair

All teams were WINNERS in this event and we want to give a special mention to the Christian Riders in Faith motorcycle ministry who really got creative in their wheelchair from the leg rests to the split HD tank on the sides or the arm rest. The paint job was amazing, and I just know that they next injured riders will be rocking this beautiful red wheelchair.

420 from Valiants MC North had but 2 weeks to customize this FAST wheelchair.

Honorable Mention goes to 420 from the Valiants MC for their customized wheelchair. 420 did an outstanding job of customizing this wheelchair and while most people didn’t know this they were a last minute entry and only had 2 weeks to get their chair done. A HUGE thank you to everyone from the Valiants MC, they have over 10 years of supporting BikerDown and are 1 of the reasons that this organization exists.

After the event and awards were distributed there was a rumor between the teams that they wanted to RACE their wheelchairs around Dirty Dogs. It was finally decided that the teams would do 2 laps around the Dirty Dogs. You quickly learn how difficult it is to get around on a wheelchair, so some of the contestants got a little help from their team members.

All in all it was an amazing day and because of these teams efforts, BikerDown has 5 new cool wheelchairs to donate to injured riders. They also were able to fill their trailer with donated medical equipment including a almost brand new Electric Scooter donated by Jocelyn Cavender who contacted Home Medical Supplies in Lone Tree for the donation.

Local Colorado Business Owner Inducted into the 2020 Sturgis Hall of Fame

September 8, 2020 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

I had the distinct pleasure of being invited to attend the 2020 Sturgis Hall of Fame breakfast to watch my dear friend and mentor Vicki San Felipo, founder of Road Guardians be inducted in the Sturgis Hall of Fame.  It is quite an honor for a woman rider to be recognized by your peers for such a prestigious award in this industry.  You quickly realize upon arrival that you are witnessing a part of motorcycle history and that there are so many riders/business owners that have given their lives to the sport of motorcycle riding and fight every day to make the industry better.

Midway thru the breakfast a familiar name was announced.  Arlin Fatland owner of 2 Wheelers motorcycle shop, Denver Colorado.  I quickly rushed up there to be front and center to see one of our own Colorado business owners be inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame.  Here is a little background about Arlin.

He owns and operate one of the few original, independent motorcycle shops that have held firm to their traditions over the decade with 50 years in the same location.  Innovative from the start, 2 Wheelers became known for carrying the newest components, manufacturing their own after-market parts, and their catalog since the 1970’s.

Arlin also build custom choppers and his bikes are regularly featured in magazines.  He has been attending Daytona and Sturgis every year since the 1970’s too and has opened stores in both locations to fulfill the needs of riders.

Arlin has also worked with the Hamsters for over 40 years in various charity efforts industry wide.  The story of 2 Wheelers and Arlin is one of steady, consistent, and humble industry engagement fueled by an unabashed love of motorcycle and riders.

He was incredibly humbled by the roar of the crowd as he walked up to speak, and after he thanked the Hall of Fame and others that had helped him get there, he turned to his 30 year life-long partner, the back bone of the business and the back bone of ME, and in front of everyone asked Donna Malfin to marry him.  Our congratulations to Arlin, Donna and look forward to another 50 years of 2 Wheelers being a staple in the Denver motorcycle riding community.

Best in Show 2020: 2019 Road King Custom

March 5, 2020 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

By: Shawn Cox

I started my Bike build project in 2015 after buying a new stock Harley that my wife didn’t want me tearing down to build a custom bike. I was working with a new builder in town from Arizona who was bringing the big wheel craze into town. After seeing a couple of 23-26 and even a 30 roll out of his shop I knew I wanted to build one. I started watching insurance auctions looking for a bike to start with since I didn’t want to tear down my road glide.

I found a road king that looks to have been wrecked and missing all the parts I was going to replace. I picked it up to find the entire frame and motor was trashed. I was now out some cash and had nothing to work with. I reached out to Chassis Design in CA. and started ordering a custom frame to start my build. They sent out the wrong frame and when I finally got around to mocking it up, I found that the neck was welded wrong and trees wouldn’t fit correctly. After finding out the company had sold and the previous company owner gave me the run around for 6 month I resolved the issue with its current owner who was a great guy to work with and finally got my frame back set up for a 32 inch wheel.

So now I have all the parts including a Competition KIllas rear end from TOL in Las Vegas NV and a 3rd child on the way. Then again, I put my project on hold again for 6-8 months.

I had recently ran across another local shop called Notorious Concepts in Parker who installed a upgraded sound system on my Fat Tire Road Glide. They had done some clean work and I watched some bikes roll out of the shop and decided to work with them on this build. As all bikes start out, I wanted a simple bike 1 color that I could twist around on and have some fun. Well that’s as simple as it got….

As we stood around the shop looking at the bike as it progressed, we started looking at other bikes coming from Dirty bird in Arizona and DA Performance in the Mid-West simple wasn’t good enough any longer. I wanted to play with the big boys and build a showstopper. We started Dimond cutting the fins on a custom S&S 124 ci motor built by Mr. Tom Shoupe a great guy with a rep of building consistent power and good motors. We clear coated the motor and started sending everything else to Lee at Pristine Powder Coating to be done in candy apple green.

When it came time to pick out floorboards and controls, I found a new player in the parts game named Vitty Designs from Italy on Facebook. Mateo was doing things a bit different and caught my eye with his style and details. He also gave an option for brass and gold plating… Once those parts arrived, I was hooked. I thought I need the motor and other parts to match. I sent all my parts out to be chrome and asked what the cost would be to gold certain parts while out for chrome. I about fell on the floor, So I went online and did some research and found a way I could do my own gold plating for way cheaper. I called all my friend to donate any stock parts they would part from to practice on until I finally got it down. So, we began gold plating parts on my bike until we had just enough to bring out the bling and stand out. About that time, we took all the paint sets to Jarod @ Motorsport Concepts to have the paint done. Working with the Mad Scientist Randy Gustafson was the best. He took some conversations with Will, Jarod and myself and took my paint to the next level. I had seen Randy around for years in the car scene but never had anything worth his talent. He took some Fb photos of bikes I liked and added his own touch and as you can see knock it out of the park with the knurling matching gold leaf and hand painted stripes and candy paint.

A lot of people like to talk about this bike. They comment on the paint, the size of the wheel or how it lays frame on the ground, YOU CAN’T RIDE THAT BIKE!!

I sit back and laugh at some of the comments and try to educate them on how lay frames work and what air ride is and how we used a swing arm as our air tank among other unique custom thing that have been done. I ride this bike down dirt country washboards to get to the highway in Elbert county and they are in disbelief.

Do I ride this bike on long trips? No, I have a Road Glide with a 180-18 fat tire that I also ride on longer runs so yes this is a head turning fun around town bike that’s made to catch your attention and have some fun at shows. The first real ride I did with my wife after getting it finally registered and insured, I was being filmed by a couple in a brand-new bright orange Lambo. That made me feel good a 250K car and he liked my bike enough to film it out his window while driving down road. I was drooling on their car while they filmed me wanna trade?

We showed the bike in a booth at the 2019 Colorado Motorcycle Expo for Notorious Concepts and Motorsport Concepts. To date since finishing the bike we have won 2 back to back best of shows with the most recent one being the 2020 Colorado Motorcycle Expo.

We look forward to a long summer of riding enjoying this 32-inch Road King #KingofDenver
