International Motorcycle Shows Announces 2022 schedule

February 14, 2022 By Laurie Montoya

FEBRUARY 14, 2022 BY MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS

Santa Monica California – Progressive IMS Outdoors, the nation’s leading motorcycle tour connecting enthusiasts with a wide array of Powersports brands, today announced the dates and locations of its 2022 tour. Produced with Progressive Insurance as the title sponsor for the 13th consecutive year, the eight-city series will revisit three markets that hosted the indoor version of the International Motorcycle Shows (Colorado, Arizona, and New York) and return to five markets that IMS Outdoors visited last tour (Chicago, Pennsylvania, Atlanta, and Northern and Southern California).Tickets will go on sale on March 24 at www.motorcycleshows.com.

Heading into the sophomore year, the experience-focused event will bring back the popular two-wheel and four-wheel demo programs, eBikes, shopping, custom and vintage bikes, and music, while also offering more chances for enthusiasts to engage with brands and their riding community, from ride-ins and races to speakers and charitable efforts.

“The launch of IMS Outdoors was an exciting challenge that armed us with learnings we look forward to applying on the 2022 tour, including an expansion of the highly successful demo program, growing our electric footprint, and adding more experience-focused offerings,” said Tracy Harris, SVP of Progressive IMS Outdoors. “The Powersports industry is amid a transformative period in time as new brands emerge, such as bespoke and electric companies, and we welcome an all-new generation of riders. We are so proud to cater our event to the changing needs of the industry and reunite everyone from new riders and kids to life-long enthusiasts.”

2021 Tour Results:

  • More than 35,000 motorcycle demo rides were taken across the eight-city tour
  • Nearly half, 44%, of attendees were new to riding or prospective riders; IMS is a catalyst for industry-wide growth and is driving new customers for exhibitors and event sponsors
  • The introduction of SxS and eBike demos were well-received and indicated the community’s growing interest in adjacent products
  • Influenced by IMS’ award-winning Discover The Ride program, three different programs put more than 1,600 adults and teens on a motorcycle for the first time
  • Nearly 1,700 kids rode two-wheeled balance and battery-operated bikes with Strider, Harley-Davidson, and Husquvarna

Harris continued: “We could not be more excited to announce this year’s tour schedule, which was built in partnership with the industry’s leading OEMs. Our team is working diligently to produce an even more robust event that brings the love of riding to life and look forward to sharing more details regarding activations and participating brands with our community soon.”

Heated riding gear in Colorado

January 25, 2022 By Laurie Montoya

JANUARY 25, 2022 BY MOTORCYCLE RIDER NEWS LEAVE A COMMENT

TFLBike is Colorado-based, and we ride whether summer or winter. Buying the kit, you need to start riding with a heated vest and gloves is expensive, though. Motorcycle Rider News shares a TFLBike product review on heated riding gear and is the reward worth the investment.

What costs less is stacking layers when you go out to ride, but many jackets can restrict your movement and get in the way. Plus, nobody wants to carry all those layers everywhere you go once you dismount.

We teamed up with Revzilla to test out some basic Gerbing gear and see if it is worth the price. TFLBike can be found on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram

Colorado Motorcycle Expo Moved to February 19th and 20th Due to COVID Mandates

January 7, 2022 By Colorado Rider News

The annual Colorado Motorcycle Expo was scheduled for January 29th and 30th and has now been moved to February 19th and 20th, 2022. This change was prompted by the State of Colorado’s vaccine mandate for indoor crowds larger than 500 people, as well as the surge of COVID cases in the state of Colorado and the staffing shortages this surge has presented.

The mandate will expire on February 3, 2022; thus, it will not impact the February dates. Additionally, Scott Schulz has proactively applied for a variance to the ordinance, which they anticipate will be granted should the mandate be extended through February. They have carefully thought through all the potential conflicts this will pose to our many dedicated vendors, who have committed or were planning on attending later this month. They have reached out to all the vendors, sponsors and this decision was an absolute last resort.

They feel very confident that despite disruptions to travel arrangements and the logistical challenges this may bring, these new dates will allow for a much better experience for attendees and vendors alike. In addition to the COVID restrictions being lessened in February, they strongly believe they will have a much better turnout from the public as this gives us even more time to promote the event and to ensure everything is in place to make this show bigger and better than ever!!

Unlike in previous years, having the Expo during a holiday weekend will allow them more flexibility with our schedule, particularly on Sunday, February 20th when they can have more flexibility to extend hours or even have some sort of event that evening. With Monday being a holiday, they definitely have more options and fewer conflicts!.

The Expo is fully committed to making this transition as seamless as possible for all of you, and we will be announcing more details and exciting plans for the new dates in the coming days.

They asked me to apologize on behalf of the Expo for any inconvenience this may cause and again assure you this was a forced decision.  Also, if you are trying to call us them with questions, please be patient and understand that they are being inundated with phone calls and there are only a staff of 2 of them trying to respond. And as you can imagine, with such limited notice, they are working through many logistical challenges themselves.  We know that email can be annoying, but you may possibly receive a quicker response that way.

On behalf of Colorado Rider News, I commend Scott and Christy Schulz for having to make this painful decision and think about the safety of attendees and put on the best Expo that they can. This is the 3rd year they have attempted to host this event, and last year, it had to be canceled, so it is so very important that WE as a biker community understand and stand by them.

Broadway Customs: Bringing the Build Community Back Together

October 7, 2021 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

Scott O'Sullivan - Founder of Rider Justice
Scott O’Sullivan

By Scott O’Sullivan, Founder, Rider Justice

What do you do when you’ve got a motorcycle dream – a big, roaring, airbrushed, custom, community-building dream – and you don’t know the first thing about making it a reality?

According to Cody Kiebler, you take the first step. Then the next step. Then “take advantage of everything that comes your way.”

Cody and his business partner, Kevin Bolser, are the owners of Broadway Customs, a tiptoe-tail, full-service motorcycle shop. Walking in Broadway Customs (which they encourage EVERYONE to do, not just motorcycle geeks), you’d never know that they’ve got biology and aerospace degrees between the two of them. How did these two ever open a motorcycle shop?

Actually, it starts with a motorcycle crash.

Kevin, an American military veteran, got hit on his Harley, and it was totaled. When he got a check from his insurance company to rebuild it, he called his good friend Cody. The two of them had always dreamed of owning a motorcycle shop but didn’t know how to start. Now, thanks to Kevin’s insurance check, they had enough money to build a motorcycle. That seemed like a good place to start.

They built their first bike: a hardtail, bobber-style Sportster. They worked out of Cody’s garage. Then a buddy came by and asked them to turn his dirt bike into a café racer. They said, “Yeah, we can do that!” And they did.

With two bikes under their belts, Kevin headed to Motorcycle Mechanic School at Universal Technical Institute, and he earned his Harley certifications.

Cody was already working in the aerospace industry and was skilled at computer animated design (CAD). He was ready to put his design and manufacturing skills to work on motorcycles. Together, they opened their first, small commercial bike shop.

That’s when the Old Bike Barn selected the two of them as a builder in their Greasy Dozen Builder Collective. Not only did that experience expand their own skills and their reputation, but it helped them to articulate their mission: To bring the motorcycle build community back together.

“A big part of what the Old Bike Barn does is to share knowledge,” says Cody. “They got frustrated with the bike build culture of the 90s, when nobody shared their knowledge. With the Greasy Dozen, they bring 13 winners together, give them the prize money up front, and encourage them to work together as a community. We want to replicate that culture in our shop.”

As the men were establishing themselves as full service bike experts, they were on the lookout for more space. They discovered an old building at 4398 S. Broadway, which had been a motorcycle shop since the 1980s, and it felt like serendipity.

“The price was right, the timing was right, the location was right,” says Cody, who says that the traffic on Broadway has expanded their business exponentially. Broadway Customs was officially born.

Dream realized, right? Wrong. Cody and Kevin just keep expanding their dream and taking the next step, then the next step to make it a reality.

For example, they invested in a carbon fiber 3D printer, which enables them to print custom parts for custom jobs, and they have also created their own retail shop with custom products. Because the parts are so much lighter than typical motorcycle parts, they anticipate this work will revolutionize the racing industry.

But it also helps them serve their individual clients better.  “We had a customer come in and he needed a lever bracket,” says Cody. “We brought the bike in, designed the part, printed it and had it on his bike that day!”

Next up: they want to purchase another 3D printer that prints in aluminum, titanium and steel. But that item will have to wait while the guys install their new DynoJet 250IX, which will enable the shop to performance-tune any bike, trike, or powersports equipment with wheels. The Dyno also allows the shop to expand their diagnostic capabilities with digital accuracy.

Throughout all of this expansion, Cody and Kevin have also sought ways to put their mission into practice: they seek to constantly build community as they build bikes.

“The motorcycle build community doesn’t have a reputation for sharing,” explains Cody. “These guys have a lot of pride but when they refuse to share their knowledge, it pigeonholes them into a very small avenue of work.”

He continues, “For us, the motorcycle community is vast. We want to share our techniques with everyone. We want our shop to be a comfortable place for everyone, no matter their skillset or experience.”

Broadway Customs hosts bike nights every other Thursday, where the shop’s employees teach important, fun maintenance and customization skills. Cody also rides with members of his church, the Red Rocks Church, hoping to meet as many riders as he can.  “We want the build community to be open to everyone.”

Today, Cody says that Broadway Customs can do just about anything a person could dream of doing to their bike… or just provide regular maintenance. From cracked frames, to ground-up new builds, to next-level airbrush design, to oil changes, Broadway Customs does it all.

Cody says they are now dreaming about building a bike that could break a land-speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats.  “I’ve got a Honda that we want to work on,” says Cody. “In the Honda’s class, not a lot of records have been set at Bonneville, so we’d like to build it and break a record at Bonneville.”

It’s all about taking the next step.

Moon Angell takes over as General Manager of Dirty Dogs Roadhouse

October 7, 2021 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

Over the summer, most of you have seen Moon Angell at Dirty Dogs Roadhouse.  Like me, I always saw Moon at Dirty Dogs, but it was in a different capacity this summer.  Mark & Rob hired Moon as General Manager of our beloved biker bar, and the difference has been very noticeable.

Moon brings an eclectic vibe into the bar, and the staff will work hard, provide you excellent service, but make no mistake; Moon will boot you for the night if you aren’t acting right or disrespecting any of the staff.

Moon has been in love with motorcycles since her first experience at 14 when a motorcycle club rolled thru her Louisiana small country town.  She knew after hearing the roar of the bikes that her life had just roared past her.  She left home at 16 and got her first bike to ride every day to go milk the cows.

She was raised with a high work ethic and the old skool concept of handling your shit and not asking anyone for anything.  Since then, she has been truly blessed in the biker world.  The late Jerry Graves built her current chopper from Graves Custom Cycles out of Boynton Beach, Florida.  For years, she would ride to Sturgis every year with Jerry and the gang and set up one of his custom bikes at the Sturgis motorcycle museum and had the pleasure to hang with the great bike builders of our time such as Arlen Ness, Eddie Trotta, Jesse James, and Tako Sikkaso.

Moon also enjoys mentoring and empowering today’s current women riders and runs a women’s Facebook Group called 303 Purdy li’l Chug-ettes.  Her philosophy is that it takes more strength to be a strong chick than to rely on your looks to get you thru the door.  Women today need to be true sisters and faithful friends.  One of the reasons many lady bikers will call her Mama Moon, because Moon can always be found with a smile on her face, backing up others, and uplifting anyone who needs some encouragement.

She is looking forward to meeting every customer that rolls thru Dirty Dogs and appreciates such an incredible opportunity to work with 2 of the most successful, badass bosses in the biker community.  They have given Moon the freedom to add her Classy, Sassy & a Bit Smart Assy attitude into the mix at Dirty Dogs and to back it up with quality service that bikers want in the #1 Biker Bar in Colorado.

Dirty Dogs Roadhouse – Celebrates 4-year anniversary October 16th

October 4, 2021 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

By Laurie Montoya

When Mark and Rob ventured into the transformation of our beloved Susie’s bar, no one could have imagined the Dirty Dogs Roadhouse that it is today.  A biker bar that is more to us than a bar to catch a quick drink, grab a bite to eat, and hit the road again.  Dirty Dogs Roadhouse is our HOME.

There hasn’t been a time in the past 4 years that I haven’t walked in and saw someone I knew who said hello.  It reminds me of the TV show Cheers back in the day when Norm would walk in, and everyone said, “Hey Norm.”    It is a place where everyone knows your name, and if you are riding alone or feeling lonely, you can ride up to Dirty Dogs and see someone you haven’t seen in years and melt the stress of live away.

In 2017, so much work went into the first wave of renovations of the original Susies’ building neglected and renovated by others for years.  It would require more than repainting.   Dirty Dogs had to have a certain biker flair but keep the same vision of the Susie’s we loved.  The biker community didn’t disappoint and supported and packed Dirty Dogs from the moment that it opened.

In late 2017-2018, came Mark and Rob’s vision to create an outdoor patio area that could accommodate the overwhelming number of riders coming in on the weekends.  For months, customers would go just to watch Mark, Bart & Rob doing the improvements themselves, and you could see the excitement each week as another intricate piece of wall or concrete was poured.

In 2019, the 3rd wave was the outdoor stage area that would enable Mark & Rob to bring bigger entertainment and host multiple riding events simultaneously.  The 4th wave was the upper parking lot to allow more riders and vehicles to park safely.

Dirty Dogs is also where most in our community will start or end their charity rides or hold our parties.  Dirty Dogs Roadhouse is also where we have mourned the loss of the bikers that we have lost over the years.  Munky Mark was taken from our biker community 2 years ago, and it was standing room only as we laughed, cried, and remembered a life that was taken from us too soon!  Mark and Rob ensured that Munky’s beloved bike will forever be displayed at Dirty Dogs for his years of service to the community and love and friendship to all of us.

The history and biker memorabilia around the bars leave no open space, and there is always something that takes us back to a time when Freedom of the Ride was FREE.  Dirty Dogs brings the best entertainment and great food, including their new BBQ trailer.

Biker bars like this are rare, and for Dirty Dogs to have not only shown impressive growth over the years (with more to come in 2022) but to have also survived the pandemic with little to no income and rapidly changing restrictions from the health department, shows their management is solid. The biker community will support Dirty Dogs thru thick and thin.

Dirty Dogs will be hosting their 4th Anniversary Birthday party on October 16th so SAVE THE DATE and Thank you, Dirty Dogs, for giving the biker community in Denver a place to call HOME! Please enjoy this 3-page spread honoring the growth of Dirty Dogs Roadhouse

Colorado Motorcycle Expo 2022

October 4, 2021 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

We’re excited to announce that the Colorado Motorcycle Expo is back for 2022! It will be held on January 29th and 30th at the National Western Complex in downtown Denver.  Formerly known as the Colorado Motorcycle Show & Swap, the Expo has been held annually in Denver since 1978. After starting at the Adams County Fairgrounds, the Expo moved to the National Western Complex in the early 1980s, and it draws people from all over the country.  The Expo has always had a large and loyal following among motorcycle enthusiasts, with 20,000-25,000 people attending the event each year.

The 2022 Expo is especially exciting because we’re back and better than ever after COVID canceled our 2021 show.  During COVID, we actively promoted motorcycle-related events throughout the Denver area during our off-year to help local businesses during these trying times. Now that our main event is back on for 2022, the responses we’ve received from sponsors, vendors, and attendees have been astounding.

The 2022 Expo will have 3 main components: 1) The largest indoor motorcycle swap meet in the country, 2) The largest custom & antique motorcycle show in the Rocky Mountain Region, and 3) Live entertainment and other attractions, like live bands, a VIP lounge, tattoo competitions, a wet T-shirt contest, the used bike corral, a kid zone, giveaways, and so much more.

We are committed to maintaining and improving upon the core elements that have made this an amazing event for the past 44 years–bringing together bikers and all who love motorcycles to buy and sell parts and goods, display and view unique motorcycles, and have one hell of a party! You don’t want to miss this fantastic event, so get your tickets now at www.coloradomotorcycleexpo.com

Thank you!

Scott and Christy
