It’s Sturgis Time!

August 3, 2018 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

August is here and it’s Sturgis time! Many of us are going on our last motorcycle vacations of the season, and we are taking those vacations with our families. After enduring the hottest riding season that I can remember, it is good to know that fall is just around the corner and cooler temperatures are coming.

Speaking of Sturgis, I never know what is happening on any given day until it is too late, so Colorado Rider News has included a calendar of entertainment, activities and bike contests. Don’t forget Dirty Dogs Roadhouse has their bar open for business, so make sure you stop in and check it out! Let’s show them our Colorado support.

Every month we try to mix it up and try new things. This month we have some amazing veteran events coming up after Sturgis with The Salute to American Veterans in Cripple Creek, CO, and the Combat Vets upcoming event for American Military Families.

After running this publication for 7 months, the giving nature of this motorcycle community for charities and families in need never ceases to amaze me. Colorado Rider News will try every month to help these charities get their message out.

Rider Justice – Our community is getting ready for an amazing new organization here in Colorado. Rider Justice is going to make a difference in this riding community

On a final note, BikerDown and Randy’s Run for Fallen Bikers have partnered to help bikers better. Both organizations feel that this will enable us to offer more effective services for the betterment of the injured rider community.

As always, please let us know what’s on your mind. Whatever you ride, Colorado Rider News wants to talk about what’s important to you. Send me an email with your suggestions: info@ ColoradoRiderNews.com or feel free to make comments on our website!

No matter what, RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!

Announcing Rider Justice: Fighting for Bikers’ Rights

August 3, 2018 By Scott O'Sullivan Leave a Comment

I recently received a call from a man who was at a funeral home saying goodbye to his son. To say that this call was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” would be a serious understatement. Prior to this call, I was already feeling overwhelmed, emotional and angry about the devastation I see in the Colorado biker community, which faces an unacceptable number of accidents, injuries and deaths on our roads. Dirty Dogs Roadhouse is open in Sturgis

August 3, 2018 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

Dirty Dogs Roadhouse is open in Sturgis, and they are ready for Colorado riders to stop by and see the new bar. The new bar/restaurant is located at 1025 Junction Avenue, right across from the Sturgis Harley Davidson store.

The décor will have the same Dirty Dogs Roadhouse flare, and as one owner said, “We want to combine the concept of where the old Broken Spoke meets One Eyed Jacks!” As we all have witnessed here in Colorado, when the owners put their minds to improving a biker bar, they pull out all the stops, using authentic vintage bikes and memorabilia that reflect a true biker bar.

Colorado Rider News sat down with owners last month, and here is the recap of the new improvements to the Sturgis location:

7,000 sq. foot bar/restaurant with indoor and outdoor bars. They will have a massive outside tent to host all their regulars.

DD will be bringing a limited menu of your Colorado favorites such as Cheesesteaks, their infamous wings, as well as 5-6 items from their current Golden menu.

Breakfast Bar from 6-ish every day, and a great meeting place to meet up with other riders!

Entertainment nightly with some of your Colorado favorites such as Dave Frisk and Tony Roserio. Be sure to stop by to hear Tallan Noble Latz, who was on America’s Got Talent.

Life Insurance for Motorcycle Drivers

August 3, 2018 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

By Joe Davis

As a motorcycle rider, I’m sure life insurance has been on your mind at one point or another.  We’ve all heard the horror stories of motorcycle accidents. You may have even heard that ER doctors call motorcycles “donor cycles.”

Motorcycle statistics

According to 2014 statistics, it was estimated that you’re 27% more likely to die in a crash if you drive a motorcycle (per driven mile) than someone who drives in a passenger vehicle and 5% more likely to be injured.

Those brutal statistics would make anyone think about the increase of cost for life insurance on those of us that ride a motorcycle.

Assuming your health is in order, you may qualify for term life insurance, whole life or accidental insurance and still get the best possible rates. I bring good news! Driving a motorcycle will not increase your premiums! On the other hand, if you smoke or have a health condition that’s an entirely different story.

To best answer your life insurance questions, you need to contact a great independent agent such as Joe Davis at (720) 546-0257 or Ray at (720) 663-8826 to go through your options. We have life insurance policies that offer some type of coverage after an accident, even if you’re just severely injured. Call, let’s talk about life!

Clubs: Sober Souls

August 2, 2018 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

By: Coach, Sober Souls MC, State Rep

The Sober Souls Motorcycle Club is a traditional MC that is celebrating 27 years in 2018. The club was started in 1991 and is a charter member of the Colorado Confederation of Clubs. We are, as stated earlier, a traditional MC that operates under its own bylaws with a National Governing Board. “The purpose of the Sober Souls Motorcycle Club is to encourage and conduct ourselves amongst motorcyclists with sobriety, spirituality, fellowship and service work.  Putting the welfare of the group above self-interest and helping others, individually and as a Motorcycle Club.”  We take this mission statement very seriously, and, with multiple chapters in Colorado, we are able to do this service work from Ft. Collins to Pueblo and beyond.

All the SSMC members are recovering drug addicts and alcoholics who run the gamut of society; some of us have had some of the obvious legal problems that come with addiction and alcoholism, while others have not. There are members who are mechanics, construction workers, students, addiction/recovery counselors, musicians, artists, teachers, ex-military, high-level employees of billion-dollar companies, and so on. We are grandfathers, fathers, sons, brothers, single men, married men, Christians, Pagans and atheists.

Chapters across Colorado participate in many charitable events that include rides for cancer patients or kids with medical conditions, toy runs, addiction and recovery charities, fallen bikers, etc.  Some examples of our annual events are:

Send the Kids to College Run – which supports kids with addiction issues and helps to fund higher education.

Annual Peer 1/ Haven Toy drive – which gathers hundreds of Christmas presents for kids whose parents are in intensive inpatient treatment programs.

Realities Ride for Children – We do fun decorations and help decorate bikes for the kids, bike parade as well as donate new bikes for the winners of the publicly voted best decorated bikes.

Feed the Homeless – Three times a year we do a feed the homeless event, in which we supply food, water, hygiene supplies, and clothing to hundreds of the Denver areas growing homeless population; and finally

The annual Soul Repo Poker Run to benefit The Hornbuckle Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit which helps fund sober living and recovery treatment options for many.  This run is growing every year and features top musical talent.

We also host and fund a very popular recovery meeting every week at a local inpatient treatment facility. Many of the Souls also make an annual trip to Cedaredge, CO for the International Serenity Run, which is kind of a Sober Sturgis. Like most other Motorcycle Clubs in our communities, there are a lot of behind the scenes activities that go on that support many local charities.

Speaking from a personal level as to what the Sober Souls MC has done for me, I can say this club has given me a home. When we found each other, I was already active in recovery, with 8 years free of drug use, and a little over 2 years free of alcohol. I was trying to do service work within the community on my own and just didn’t feel I was having much of an impact. One man alone can only do so much, so I sought out a group of men with whom I felt I could have a greater impact on more people. I was introduced to the club by my fallen brother Big Mike. From there many things began to click and change in my life. I began an extensive hang around/prospect phase. I grew to know humility, learned to plan events, learned to help wherever I was needed and worked my ass off to be the best future brother I could possibly be. I eventually worked my way to gain the vote from my future brothers to become a full patch member.  Now, the sky is the limit for me personally.  I’ve been pulled from the dredges of society, TO SERVE A HIGHER PURPOSE.

For more information on the SSMC, or to request help with alcoholism/addiction please go to SoberSoulsmc.com and hit the contact a Soul link at the top of the page, check out our Facebook page: Sober Souls Motorcycle Club.

Christopher’s Angel Fund Poker Run

August 2, 2018 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

By: Susan Dane

On August 26, the 8th Annual CAF Poker Run will be held as a fundraiser for The Denver Hospice.

Christopher’s Angels Fund (CAF) was founded by Bob and Donna Johnson in memory of their son. Christopher died in the care of The Denver Hospice when he was two years old. The Johnsons struggled financially during Christopher’s illness and struggled to find resources to help. They hoped that by creating this fund, they could ease the financial stress on other families coping with terminal illness.

Family assistance grants from Christopher’s Angels Fund can be requested for non-medical needs like food, mortgage/rent payments, home and auto repairs, special occasions, outings and celebrations, travel expenses, summer camps and other activity fees for children. It can also cover funeral/memorial service costs and direct care expenses not covered by insurance.

Christopher’s Angels Fund truly makes a difference in the lives of families serviced by The Denver Hospice. As families reach the end of a long battle with a terminal illness, their financial resources are often depleted. Many hospice families find themselves dealing not only with the stress of illness, but also coping with being stretched beyond their limits, trying to fit work and other responsibilities into a physically and emotionally demanding experience.

Because everyone who helps with the CAF Poker Run does so in a volunteer capacity, 100% of the funds raised go into the Fund to help the families in need.  Check out the Facebook Event Page (8th Annual CAF Poker Run) for more info. The Poker Run starts/ends at In the Zone with registration beginning at 9:00 am.

BOB: Starving Artist Studios

August 2, 2018 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

Tiffany “Road Rage” Fisher

(303) 810-1711

Tell us a little bit about yourself:  I’m a contemporary and graphic artist with severe OCD. I am married (twice) to my best friend Rusty. I have two adult children, Cody and Mykaela, 3 dogs and 3 cats. I love art, motorcycles, camping, fishing and waterskiing.

How long have you been riding and what do you ride?  I have been riding since I was about 5. As an adult, I didn’t ride for many years and picked it back up about 10 years ago. 2013 Harley Soft-tail Slim.

Are you a native of Colorado or what brought you to Colorado? Born and raised in Littleton but thinking about moving away due to the increased cost of living.

Do you ride in a group, club or independently? My husband is a Devil Dogs, so I ride with them as Devil Doll “Road Rage” but I love riding alone.

Name a place you would like to ride but haven’t been to yet?  Canada, Europe.

Tell us a little bit about your business and how long you have been in business?  Starving Artist Studios is one of my many daughter companies under Tiffco, LLC. I’ve been in business for 10 years. I do custom art of all kinds. Life-size murals, pop art acrylic on canvas, wood gun cabinetry, auto paint, and most recently, motorcycle hydrographics.

What does your business specialize in?  I mostly specialize in one-of-a-kind acrylic paint. I don’t really focus on any one subject or item, I go with whatever sparks my interest and creative side at the time.

Name 3 things that you want the biker community to know about you.   I ride pretty much every day. I do all my own engine work, body work and maintenance. I hydro-dipped, as well as, hand-painted my bike myself. Name 3 things that set you apart from your competitors?  I will attempt just about anything. I never turn down work and always give it 110%. Because I love what I do, I charge very little; sometimes just for the cost of materials.

Why do you think it is important that bikers support each other’s businesses?  I own an HVAC business and a Short Sale business as well. I will bend over backward to give my brothers and sisters a good deal, and I like to think they’d do the same for me. My dad always said “It’s not what ya know… It’s who ya know.” It not only brings us closer as a community, it’s also nice to do business with someone you know, can trust and especially someone you can count on.

Prepare Yourself! A Crash Course To Aid The Downed Motorcyclist

August 2, 2018 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

By Don Enninga, ASMI Instructor/ABATE of Colorado Northeast Coordinator

Summer is about half over! Already! Even more than half if you consider kids going back to school in mid-August, the Broncos starting their camp and Sturgis almost here!

The news has had a lot of motorcycle crashes and injury and death, unfortunately. After experiencing an incident while driving back from the ABATE state board meeting in Gunnison recently, it’s a wonder that there aren’t more tragedies involving motorcycles and vehicles.

We were not riding this time, too much stuff to take, but it didn’t stop the crazy drivers out there from almost causing us to have a crash! Case in point, a Cadillac SUV from Texas went flying around us, immediately swerved into our lane and hit the brakes to make a right turn. Between a quick, and loud, warning from Kristi and an instant reaction on my part (didn’t have time to think about it) we were able to take evasive action to the left without hitting this idiot, having a head on with other traffic or getting rear ended by the person behind us. God was guiding this situation. This may or may not have had a bad outcome if we were riding instead of driving. People driving do stupid things which can be made much worse on a bike. I hope and pray that all riders are safe and able to avoid those who may not see us or who cause crashes by their careless actions.

Accident Scene Management

That takes me to a familiar theme: Accident Scene Management and the Bystander Assistance Course that teaches motorcyclists how to safely manage a motorcycle crash scene, assess and treat the injured and interact with EMS when they arrive. This one-day class is based on the national First Responder curriculum and prepares students to handle the unexpected when riding. It’s amazing how a person can react with the proper training and education to provide safe and effective first aid. Don’t let yourself be in the situation when something happens that you don’t know what to do. Take an ASMI class through ABATE of Colorado!

Scheduling for Fall 2018 – Spring 2019 for ASMI classes is ongoing, so, as you decide that this would be a huge benefit to you and your group, getting your class on the schedule sooner rather than later will ensure that your needs can be met. Generally, a Saturday works well for most people, but classes can be scheduled on the occasional Sunday, or an afternoon into an evening class.

Space considerations

The ASMI course requires a space large enough for the number of students to sit and do their skills, a place to project the course material on a screen, and related equipment. There may also be a need to provide lodging and travel expenses depending on class location and timing.

The Accident Scene Management class is $75 per student, but there may be options to help reduce the cost to students. One idea is to get a sponsor for the class to help pay part of the cost. For instance, if you could get a business or individual to sponsor $25 or $50 of each student attending, that would cut down the cost for each person. There may possibly be foundations or other entities that might be willing to provide grant funding to assist with class costs too.

Make it happen

Inquiries for setting up classes can be made at: denninga@kci.net  or by phone at 970-768-5599. ABATE of Colorado, a motorcycle rights organization, has offered many of the classes and can be reached at www.abateofcolo.org or 303-789-3264 office. Act now to get your class scheduled!
