Navigating Constant Change

August 4, 2020 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

Laurie Montoya, Publisher

I keep believing things will get BETTER!

As we enter into August, it hits me our community is 5 months away from Christmas and the cold/flu season.  I along with others keep hoping we can close our eyes and it will be 2021.

There isn’t much good news to report this month, as the events that we anxiously await for in August are canceled or so modified that you aren’t sure they are worth going.

Sturgis 80th Rally is in a few days and as President of BikerDown, I head there each year to help in the event an injured Colorado rider needs me.  Make no mistake, I have a ton of fun, but it is good for riders to know that if you have an issue or problem, BikerDown will be up there

So here are some updates on upcoming events that we all count on each year.

Ride for Life First Responders Poker Run – July 11th is CANCELED FOR 2020.  This event helps first responders with resources for their mental health and suicide prevention.

Cripple Creek Salute to American Veterans – August 21-23 –  CANCELED, We spoke to Jim Wear of Pro-Promotions and there is a great article this issue to give riders an updated information.

Colorado Women’s Ride – August 29th  is CANCELED – City of Golden informed the organizer that due to COVID, that they would not issue a permit for the 2020 ride.

UPDATE – Organizer  Susan “Bubbles” Risky  is working with Rider Justice and Dirty Dogs Roadhouse to continue to help the community and on the 29th they will host a Day of Rock with suggested donations going to BikerDown Foundation to help injured riders.

Can  you SEE me Now – Look Twice Ride – September 5th – Normally this ride is held in May during motorcycle awareness month, but due to the shut-down rescheduled this ride for September.  You can pre-register by going to www.bikerdown.org.

6th Annual Hornbuckle Foundation – September 12th – This event is put on by the Hornbuckle Foundation and supported by the Sober Souls, MC & Dirty Dogs Roadhouse.  Proceeds from this event will be used to help those suffering from substance use disorder to assist them with sober living and recovery coaching.  For more information and updates please go to www.hornbucklefoundation.org

We are still unclear what the future will hold for weekly bike nights and other charitable rides.  Colorado Rider News will keep you updated as we get more information.

Lastly, we have updated our Biker Owned Business (B.O.B.) page with some new business that bring more diverse products and businesses to our page.  It has always been my hope that riders would look to our B.O.B. page when you need a service done, keeping those biker dollars within our community.

As always enjoy the ride, let us know what we can do better and BE SAFE OUT THERE

On the Road Again

August 4, 2020 By Scott O'Sullivan Leave a Comment

Scott O'Sullivan - The O'Sullivan Law Firm, motorcycle accident attorneys
Scott O’Sullivan

The whole world may be exhausted from stay-at-home orders and social distancing, but none have the advantage that bikers possess to escape the lock-down blues.

One recent Saturday morning, driving back towards Denver on highway 285, I saw hundreds of riders, going in the opposite direction headed into the hills. From what I could tell, they seemed to all be smaller groups going out on individual adventures. It was a beautiful sight! It made me think about how riders must all be laughing to themselves that they can continue doing what they love while mostly maintaining COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Yes, there are recent setbacks that are, again, straining our favorite restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, but the spirit of motorcyclists continuing to enjoy the freedom that the open road offers is pretty special. And together, we’ve all reached the end of our ropes and are ready to get back to events that let us celebrate the brotherhood and sisterhood that bikers hold so dear. So, let me share a few things that we have to look forward to for the rest of the summer.

8/22: On The Wings of Angels Poker Run

This is our second year sponsoring this event for Angel Eyes. Angel Eyes is a non-profit that helps Colorado families cope with the sudden, unexpected death of an infant or toddler, miscarriage, and stillbirth loss. They offer professional bereavement counseling, a support group, peer connections, and community referrals to those who are grieving.

This is their 4th Annual Motorcycle Poker Run and what a great event to support! The ride starts and ends at Dirty Dogs Roadhouse and entry fees include breakfast, lunch, swag bag and door prize ticket! Other fundraising takes place through their silent auction and 50/50 drawing.

We’ll be there to cheer on riders and give away more prizes. You can find out more details and register at angeleyes.org.

8/29: Colorado Women’s Day of Rock

Rider Justice was all set to sponsor the Women’s World Record Ride on 8/29 but organizers were recently denied necessary permits due to COVID-19. This may limit the number of out-of-state lady riders for that date, but the rest of us are still here and desperate for entertainment. We decided to keep the national act Lez Zeppelin, an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band, booked and plan for next year’s world record attempt.

The show will be free with in-kind donations going to local non-profit, BikerDown.

Mark your calendars and join us on 8/29. There will be vendors and live music all day. Join us early to grab a picnic table with a great view and celebrate the women who will beat that world record in 2021!

9/5: Honda Monkey Contest Drawing/ Look Twice Save a Life Ride

The bad news is that we were originally going to give away this fiery little 125cc beast at the Look Twice Save a Life Ride in May. The good news is that you still have time to register because the BikerDown annual ride is now scheduled for September 5th.

Because of all the uncontrollable issues with events so far this year, we’ve adjusted the contest where there will be five pre-qualifiers drawn before the event and another five will be drawn on the day of to offer more chances at winning. We will have keys and each qualifier will have a chance to see if their key starts the bike!

Remember, you can register once online and every time you see Rider Justice or BikerDown at an event. The day of the event will be your last chance to register so plan on spending the day with us after the BikerDown ride.

Register now for the Look Twice Save a Life Ride at BikerDown.org as early registration guarantees a ride t-shirt. Day of registrations are welcome and appreciated but shirts may be limited at that point.

Gaiter survey

We have a small giveaway we’re doing with your voluntary help with a very short survey. It’s three questions only and at least the first 50 people will receive a customized Rider Justice gaiter in the mail.

You may participate in the survey giveaway here.

What to do

There was this blissfully brief time this spring when motorcycle accidents were extremely low. Unfortunately, the trend is swinging back hard. If you or someone you care about has been in an accident that wasn’t their fault, encourage them to take the time to speak with me. People seem to be eternally optimistic that if they have medical and motorcycle insurance, everything will work out, but I am here to tell you that you want someone who knows their tricks on your side. I will happily meet with anyone to discuss their case for free and help them figure out next steps. Call or text me anytime at 303-388-5304

10 Teams Compete: Customized Wheelchair Competition

August 4, 2020 By Laurie Montoya Leave a Comment

2020 has been one of the most challenging years for any non-profit or small business owner with COVID-19 hitting our community here in Colorado and nationwide. As Executive Director of BikerDown, my job is to get as creative as possible with fundraising activities and I believe that this wheelchair competition shows how a small non-profit can think outside the box.

BikerDown is planning our first medical equipment drive and fundraiser through an exciting contest where competing groups submit customized wheelchairs for prizes. All attendees of the event are encouraged to clear out some storage space and donate gently-used medical equipment to BikerDown so that we can replenish our equipment and help even more injured bikers.

September 5, 2020

On September 5th at the Can You SEE me Now motorcycle awareness ride, 10 teams of motorcycle clubs, riding groups and bike builders will show just how creative they can get with a standard wheelchair and present their final customized wheelchair in bike-show fashion Teams will compete for prizes and trophies and the coveted People’s Choice award. BikerDown has brought in 3 great judges to judge the competition and the attendees at will vote for their favorite teams’ wheelchair.

This is a new innovative way to add medical equipment to our arsenal to help injured riders. An injured rider will never be charged for medical equipment from BikerDown. A motorcycle rider recovering never wants to be in a wheelchair, but when we bring them these tricked out chairs, they always have a smile on their faces because they know it was created with love and respect.

Thank you to Rider Justice for continuing their sponsorship of the Look Twice Save A Life Ride and for helping with our medical equipment drive here in Colorado buy buying wheelchairs for this competition. (Also, at the Sept. 5 event, Rider Justice will be drawing for the winner of the Honda Monkey!)

The Original Wheelchair Competition

The wheelchair competition was 1st launched in February by our Las Vegas BikerDown Chapter to build inventory for this start-up chapter.  Executive Director, Cerah Venturo and Dazzlin 2-wheel division Manager from Vegas sponsor Full Throttle Law created a tremendous event and brought the motorcycle community together to make this a fun event with a DJ, food and a medical equipment rodeo. Not only did the chapter have 10 amazing chairs at the end of the day, but the community donated so much medical equipment, that they had to rent a 26 ft. U-Haul to get it to the storage garage.

BikerDown is celebrating our 10th year of helping injured motorcycle riders and hosts the National chapter.  It is our hope that the Colorado riding community will come out on September 5th, enjoy a great ride, and share our hope to do everything our community can to help injured motorcycle riders with their recovery.

We still have a few spots available for this competition, if you are interested, please contact Laurie Montoya: laurie@bikerdown.org.

If you have any gently used medical equipment, bring that equipment Saturday, September 5th to Dirty Dogs Roadhouse and donate it at our collection area.

Gov. Polis Orders Bars and Restaurants: Stop serving alcohol after 10pm

August 4, 2020 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

In our last issue we updated our readers that on June 30th Gov. Polis ordered the closing of bars, nightclubs due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases, with the exception of bars that also function as a restaurant could stay open. Luckily for quite a few of our biker related stops such as Dirty Dogs, The Stagecoach, Takoda Tavern and The Piper, food comprises of over 45% of their sales. Our hopes were that they had dodged a big bullet that could have potentially caused many of these establishments to just not re-open at all.

However, on July 21st, Gov Polis struck another blow to bar/restaurants by mandating a 10pm last call for alcohol for 30 days. Bars/restaurants can stay open past 10pm, but they must stop serving alcohol.

The question is what does this mean for our local biker restaurants and bars? I spoke with 2 bar owners in Aurora and Golden who said this will have an adverse effect on their businesses. “We are still trying to overcome the last 60 shutdowns; I don’t know how we will survive this.”  Another bar owner who asked to remain anonymous said, there is no data to support this type of 10pm cut off of alcohol, and it is hard to not feel profiled by the Polis, when you see hundreds of protesters in the 20-29 age bracket protesting every single night. Why can they gather all evening, and our patrons cannot have a beer after 10pm.

Polis said he typically disagrees with last call laws that bars, nightclubs, and restaurants must stop serving alcohol at 2 a.m. in Colorado.

If you want to get drunk, nobody is saying alcohol causes coronavirus, it doesn’t. Have three or four people over in your home, and a small event with them, not 40 people in your home, and not at a bar/restaurant. So, there’s a safer way to do these things in a pandemic. I know part of the fun is being around 80, 100 people, we cannot do that now. Learn the new way, learn to do three, four or five people … have fun in a safe way.

Colorado Governor, Jared Polis

A group of more than 200 bars and restaurants in Colorado filed a lawsuit against Gov. Jared Polis (D) and the state’s Department of Public Health and Environment to block coronavirus guidelines that ban alcohol sales after 10 p.m. and limit capacity.

The Tavern League of Colorado filed the lawsuit on Thursday in a Denver district court, alleging that bars and restaurants have been singled out for “unfair and different treatment” and arguing there is no evidence suggesting they are contributing to the spread of the disease, according to report from Colorado Public Radio.

“We are extremely disappointed with the action Governor Polis took,” Stephanie Fransen Hicks, executive director of the Tavern League, said in a statement. “Restaurants and bars have gone above and beyond to keep both employees and patrons safe and continue to aggressively follow all health and safety guidelines.”

Colorado Rider News will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available.

From the Owner of Wrigley’s Chicago Bar and Grill

By Skip Perry

The 10pm liquor curfew is just an additional means by our democratic government (Polis) to devastate the restaurant and bar industry in Colorado. You would think with the ten-week shut down from March 17th through May 27th the powers that be would help us out in every way possible. According to the CRA (Colorado Restaurant Association) over 20% of Bars and restaurants did not reopen after the initial shut down and with current restrictions upwards of 57% would end up throwing in the towel by the end of September. These are not just small brand-new bars and restaurants that have just opened in the last year or two. Its large restaurants including well known chains, small restaurants, and sadly many Mom & Pop restaurants that have been in business for decades. The reopening in May albeit a joyous announcement at first, came with many dire restrictions that almost certainly will doom many in our industry. The first and most consequential being “occupancy at 25% to 50% of normal with a maximum total of 50-100 customers” depending in which County your business is in. Imagine you are a bigger venue that holds 400-2000 customers, we have the Buff in Golden and so many in Denver, how can you possibly operate and pay bills let alone keep employees? Let us get back to the 25%-50% occupancy put on all of us. What business can stay afloat doing only 50%?

What if you told your insurance agent, real estate agent, your grocery stores, your gas stations, your airlines, Amazon, Home Depot, etc. they could only service 25-50% of their customers? Do you think they would stay in business? The restaurant industry has a nationwide mortality rate of over 50% for new restaurants after one year and 80% fail by their fifth year. It goes without saying in a perfect economy the restaurant and bar business is as tough to succeed as any business. We in our industry are hanging on by our teeth. We have let many employees go, we have cut back on products making menus smaller, we have made cuts wherever possible to keep our doors open. So, what does the governor do to help us? He says, “you can sell drinks to go so people can drink and drive!” What the hell!!! That is not a help (the rewards are not worth the risk) and puts us at an extremely high risk and makes us vulnerable to lawsuits should accidents happen. When he first announced that new guideline, I said he must be trying to put us out of business!!! Now he comes up with alcohol sales after 10pm are the cause of the rise of covid-19!!! I believe he has a dart board and randomly throws darts every month to see what his next decision will be. Unfortunately, he always manages to hit the bar and restaurant industry. Does he have any accumulated data to validate these new laws? I think not!!! Do people randomly congregate more after 10pm than a normal happy hour 4-6? Do people drink more from 10pm-2am than 6-10pm? Does the Corona Virus wait in hiding and attack at 10:01pm? I wholeheartedly believe these rash decisions do not have any merit and cannot be substantiated with empirical data. In a nutshell the 10pm liquor curfew will take 100’s if not 1000’s of dollars a day away from each owners business in a struggling/dying industry, and will be the straw that breaks the restaurant/bar camel’s back!!!

Lunch at Riverbend Eatery, Bailey

August 4, 2020 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

By Audrey Paulus – Stormy

One Friday afternoon, I took six of my male riding buddies to Bailey to try out The Riverbend Eatery, right along the North Fork of the South Platte River.  Once the owner, Mike Abbondanza, heard the roar of our seven bikes pulling up, he immediately came out to greet us and to make sure we parked next to his Honda Valkyrie.  I enjoy supporting business owners who ride.  I always feel that sharing in a mutual goal with others creates a bonding experience that is based on a support system, which is a healthy way to build upon a relationship with friends.

We sat on the patio that had an incredible view of the rapids and the forest.  Inside seating is just as good as the outside seating as it has large windows which are wide open in the warmer weather.

Mike is Italian, so of course, The Riverbend Eatery serves Italian dishes.  We all shared calamari, mussels, caprese salad, raviolis, calzone, and smash burger.  Frank said the burger was incredible and the best he ever had.   Mike boasted, “we often receive unsolicited praise about our cuisine and the dining environment. All of our dishes are “homemade”, and it makes a difference.”

The Riverbend offers 14 beers on tap which is a nice break on a ride to wet your whistle.  They also have a full cocktail and wine selection.

Mike was telling us that he has been serving Italian food/pizza in Colorado since 1980.  Since he is from New York and was having a hard time finding the foods he grew up with, he basically got into the business for that reason.

Since our visit to The Riverbend Eatery, Mike has joined our riding group Cool Biker Lunch & Rides, so we will be seeing him again on some rides.

If you are ever riding through Bailey, stop by The Riverbend Eatery and hang out on the patio and dine on some scrumptious Italian and American cuisine.  We all gave it a thumbs up!

Salute to Veterans Rally Canceled

August 4, 2020 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

33rd POW RIDE TO GO ON AS SCHEDULED

In an unexpected announcement last Thursday, the Cripple Creek City Council voted 4 to 1 to cancel the 28th annual Salute to American Veterans Rally, scheduled for August 21-23.

The rally’s founder and organizer, Jim Wear said “This decision completely blindsided us. The city of Cripple Creek approved the event and the sponsorship funding on June 17. Our huge hurdle was then to get approval from the county health department for the gathering.”

After a huge amount of work, rally organizers obtained the coveted county health permit with full approval from state and county health departments. “Most folks thought we’d never get the county permit” said Wear. “We had a solid plan in place which met all the guidelines and we were prepared to keep the crowds outdoors, safe and happy. The last thing we expected was for the city of Cripple Creek to pull the plug.”

City Council woman Meghan Rozell stated that Cripple Creek businesses and residents overwhelmingly wanted the rally canceled due to concerns over COVID-19 and the potential for the Governor to close the casinos down if an outbreak occurred. There was however a lot of feedback which seem to be contrary to Rozell’s supposition. “The first three casino owners we spoke to immediately after the decision told us that no one from the city had contacted them, and that the decision was a complete surprise to them.” Said Wear. “We also heard from many residents that they were upset at the decision.”

The other thing that came to light immediately was that rally attendees were coming anyway in spite of the Rally being canceled. The city of Cripple Creek area hotels have reported almost no room cancellations, and social media indicates that most rally attendees plan to be in Teller County on the weekend. “our belief all along was that after 30 years, the rally has a life of its own and people were coming anyway” said Wear. “We know that this is part of the reason that the county commissioners granted our permit as they understood that we needed to work together to manage the crowd, keep everyone safe, and happy outdoors. Clearly, the city of Cripple Creek did not believe the same to be true.”

Immediately after the announcement came overwhelming pressure from the community of Veterans to keep the 33rd annual POW/MIA recognition ride in place. “The recognition ride is a completely separate entity from the rally.” Said Wear. “As the ride stages in Woodland Park, they issue the permit, and their City Council was unanimously in support of the ride. We also had already put our permit from the Colorado State patrol in place and the Veterans we serve demanded the ride.” Wear added “At a time when millions of protesters nationwide have been not only allowed, but encouraged to gather in protest against America, the police, capitalism and more, it is only right that those of us who love America, the constitution, our flag and mean to celebrate our freedom would be allowed to gather, peacefully and in much smaller numbers, then those who mean to show their disdain for our country.”

Additional annual rally features that are still in place and will not be canceled include the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association POKER RUN, Friday in Cripple Creek, the “Red Friday” T-shirt giveaway in downtown Woodland Park, and the dedication of a bronze plaque to a fallen Marine in Cripple Creek city Park at 1 PM Saturday. “Chuck Geertz died on his motorcycle after last year’s rally. Chuck was a proud and loyal American who dedicated his life to serving his fellow veterans after he retired from the military.” Said Wear. “Like so many we have heard from, Chuck’s family told us that they were coming anyway as their flight and hotel reservations were in place. We decided then and there that we would be honoring Chuck and dedicating his bronze plaque on our memorial in Cripple Creek’s city park as planned.” Wear added “There are many things that City Council can hold back. There are also many things that they cannot stop from happening. Our rights to assemble, ride our motorcycles on our POW/MIA Memorial Highway and honor those veterans who so gallantly gave us our freedom will not be withheld.”

In closing, Wear added “No one can cancel FREEDOM.”

For more information on what is and what is not happening with the ride and the rally go to www.theveteransrally.org

International Female Ride Day Now: Sat., August 22, 2020

August 4, 2020 By Colorado Rider News Leave a Comment

By Diana Rowe

Ladies, no question, 2020 rolled in like a pissed off Mama Bear. Yet what remains for women is still our passion for riding.  Did you know that nearly 20 percent of motorcycle owners are women who bring the girl power to nearly 1 in 5 motorcycle owners? Hey I’m looking at you Team Gen X and Y as your age group is the fastest growing motorcycle owners, at 22 and 26 percent respectively. (Source statistics: https://www.WomenRidersNow.com/) But the super cool part is that that passion for wind therapy has not age or gender restrictions!

One of my most precious memories in gearing up and setting off with my BFFs for motorcycle riding adventures. I challenge the ladies to make 2020 the year for female riders. Call your girls and let’s get out there and ride together. If you’ve never ridden on International Female Ride Day, save the date to meet up with your girlfriends to ride on the rescheduled date of Saturday, August 22! This celebration of women motorcyclists is now in its 14th year, and it’s happening in your home town.

What IS International Female Ride Day (IFRD)?

Launched in 2007, this annual international one-day event was created for women motorcyclists by women motorcyclists and this year, it celebrates its 14th anniversary this year.

Vicki Gray, Founder of IFRD, said it best, “IFRD, created for change; to advance motorcycling for women.” All brands participate and all forms of motorcycling participate: road, track, dirt, three-wheelers, side-cars, and scooters.  JUST RIDE!

All over the world, now in six continents and over 120 countries, women fire up their motorcycles for a globally synchronized ride on IFRD each year (usually) on the first Saturday in May. Due to COVID-19 concerns in 2020, the annual ride was rescheduled to Saturday, August 22. But the mantra remains the same, calling women to “JUST RIDE!”

Who celebrates and empowers this Movement?

The group behind IFRD is MOTORESS, an online community of women motorcyclist enthusiasts based in Canada. This group wanted to bring greater awareness to women and motorcycling by designating one day each year for all female motorcycle riders to get out and ride. Their grassroots efforts have paid off as IFRD has grown to be the worldwide phenomenon it is today with hundreds of thousands of women getting the message to take out their motorcycles on that one day and ride.

In addition, Polaris, the global leader in powersports, recently partnered with International Female Ride Day® (IFRD), the globally synchronized ride day celebrating women riders and their passion for powersports.

On Saturday, August 22, in communities all over the U.S. and the world, women riders are organizing their own group of riders to spend the day on their motorcycles together. Riders who don’t have a group to ride with or simply want to ride alone, just getting out on your motorcycle, scooter, or trike on that day is good enough. If you feel like sharing your day with others, take a photo and post it on social media with the hashtag #ifrd.

Tips to JUST RIDE on IFRD

Ride to work. Call your girlfriends and arrange a meet up! Ride to a local motorcycle dealership and go shopping. Take a ride in your neighborhood. Just ride into the mountains. Ride to your local motorcycle restaurant and bar for lunch. JUST RIDE!

In addition to Colorado Rider News, there are several ways to find a group in your area of you’re not aware of one yet:

Visit MOTORESS for details on events.

Check out, LIKE and follow the official Facebook page for IFRD for more info and for sharing photos.

Visit WomenRidersNow.com and their extensive list of Women’s Motorcycling Clubs and connect with one in your area.

Call your local motorcycle dealership and ask the folks if they know of any groups of women riding on that day.

To learn more about this special day and how to get involved, visit the IFRD page on Motoress.com. You’ll also find a link to buy t-shirts and other IFRD merchandise.
